Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) Attack – Is Your VPS Protected?
Investing in web hosting is vital for the growth of every business and operation. However, your VPS may be vulnerable to malicious attacks from cybercriminals and malware organizations without proactive protection measures.
Distributed Denial-of-Service Attacks, more commonly known as DDoS attacks, have become an extremely common threat. It’s a type of cyberattack that prevents users and potential users from accessing your website, leading to reduced website traffic, customer confidence, business reputation, and business revenues.
How Does a Distributed Denial-of-Service Attack Work?
- DDoS attacks are typically carried out by vast networks of computers and internet-connected devices.
- These networks may comprise computers, laptops, IoT devices, and other devices that are infected with viruses or malware, or riddled with exploits. The presence of malware allows the attacker to control the network remotely without getting noticed or caught. Every device in the network is referred to as a "bot," and the network is called a botnet.
- After establishing a botnet, the DDoS attacker can attack a target server by sending instructions remotely.
- If the botnet attacks your web server, each bot will bombard your server's IP address with requests, causing your server to break down, leading to a denial-of-service error for website users.
- Because each targeting bot is a legitimate physical Internet-connected device, it is difficult to differentiate between usual traffic and attack traffic.
